How to Use ZoomInfo and Clay Together for Enterprise Prospecting
ZoomInfo and Clay prospecting work best together. Here's how to combine enterprise data scale with Clay's enrichment for better outbound.
Most enterprise prospecting fails because teams pick one data source and hope it's enough. It's not. ZoomInfo gives you scale and enterprise coverage. Clay gives you enrichment and signal flexibility. Using ZoomInfo and Clay prospecting together is how you get both.
This post walks through the technical setup, when to use each tool, and how to build a workflow that doesn't waste credits or burn lists.
Why ZoomInfo alone isn't enough for modern outbound
ZoomInfo is the best source for enterprise account data. The contact database is deeper than any waterfall can match, and the firmographic filters are precise enough to build serious ICP lists. But ZoomInfo doesn't enrich. It doesn't pull website tech stack, recent funding, or job posting signals. It gives you names, titles, and company size. That's it.
If you're targeting Fortune 500 accounts or mid-market companies with complex org charts, ZoomInfo is non-negotiable. But if you're running outbound in 2026 without layering in signal-based enrichment, you're leaving conversion on the table.
Clay solves the enrichment problem. It waterfalls across multiple data providers, pulls LinkedIn activity, scrapes company websites, and integrates with HubSpot natively on Growth and Custom plans. Clay doesn't replace ZoomInfo. It makes ZoomInfo lists actually useful.
The workflow: ZoomInfo for lists, Clay for enrichment
Here's the structure Partner UP uses with clients running enterprise outbound.
Step 1: Build the list in ZoomInfo
Start in ZoomInfo. Use the advanced search filters to define your ICP by company size, industry, revenue, and employee count. Export a CSV with these fields at minimum:
First name
Last name
Job title
Company name
Company domain
LinkedIn URL
Email address
Phone number (if relevant)
ZoomInfo gives you the highest match rate for enterprise contacts. The data is verified more frequently than most waterfall sources, and the coverage for VP-level and C-suite contacts is significantly better.
Step 2: Upload the list to Clay
Import the ZoomInfo CSV into a new Clay table. Map the columns to Clay's standard fields so the enrichment recipes recognise them.
Now you have two enrichment paths. Use both.
Path A: Waterfall enrichment for missing emails
Even ZoomInfo has gaps. Run Clay's email waterfall on any contact missing a verified work email. The waterfall queries multiple providers in sequence until it finds a match. This is available on all paid Clay plans and works for mid-market contacts where ZoomInfo coverage thins out.
Path B: Signal-based enrichment for all contacts
This is where the workflow gets specific. Use Clay to pull:
Recent LinkedIn activity (posts, job changes, profile updates)
Company funding announcements (via Crunchbase or similar integrations)
Technology stack (via BuiltWith or Wappalyzer)
Job postings (indicates hiring intent)
Recent news mentions (M&A, leadership changes)
These signals tell you who to reach out to first. Someone who posted about a relevant pain point on LinkedIn last week is a warmer lead than someone who's been silent for six months. A company that just raised a Series B has budget. A company posting for an SDR role is scaling and might need your tooling.
Clay stores all of this in custom columns. You can filter and segment inside Clay, or push the enriched data into HubSpot for sequencing.
When to use ZoomInfo vs Clay waterfalls
Scenario | Tool to use | Why |
|---|---|---|
Enterprise accounts, 1,000+ employees | ZoomInfo | Higher match rates, better C-suite coverage |
Mid-market accounts, 50 to 500 employees | Clay waterfall | Cost-effective, sufficient coverage |
VP and above titles | ZoomInfo | More reliable direct dials and verified emails |
Manager and IC titles | Clay waterfall | Good enough for volume plays |
Industries with strict compliance (finance, healthcare) | ZoomInfo | Data verification standards matter more |
High-velocity outbound testing | Clay waterfall | Faster iteration, lower cost per contact |
The rule is simple. If the account matters and the person is senior, use ZoomInfo. If you're testing messaging or running volume plays, Clay waterfalls are fine.
Pushing enriched data into HubSpot
Once you've enriched the ZoomInfo list in Clay, you need to get it into your CRM. Clay integrates natively with HubSpot on Growth and Custom plans. Lower-tier Clay plans require a Zapier or Make workaround, which adds latency and breaks on field mapping more often than the native sync.
The native integration lets you:
Push contacts directly into HubSpot with all enriched fields as custom properties
Trigger workflows based on signal thresholds (recent funding, LinkedIn activity score, etc.)
Update existing contact records without creating duplicates
Sync list membership for segmentation in sequences
Map your Clay enrichment columns to HubSpot custom properties before the first sync. Create properties for funding amount, last LinkedIn post date, tech stack tags, and job posting count. These become your segmentation filters in HubSpot.
Now you can build sequences that prioritise contacts with strong signals. Someone who works at a funded company, posted about your problem space in the last 30 days, and has the right title gets email one. Everyone else gets email two or waits for re-engagement.
Cost structure and credit usage
ZoomInfo charges per user per year, with additional costs for phone data and intent signals. Clay charges based on credits, which you spend on enrichments and API calls. Running both tools isn't cheap, but it's cheaper than burning a bad list or hiring an SDR to manually research every contact.
Here's the math on a typical enterprise outbound campaign:
1,000 contacts exported from ZoomInfo: $0 incremental cost if you're already paying for seats
Clay enrichment (waterfall + signals) on 1,000 contacts: roughly 5,000 to 8,000 credits depending on how many enrichment columns you run
HubSpot sync and sequence setup: $0 if you're on Professional or above
The ROI comes from conversion rate. A well-enriched list with signal-based prioritisation converts 15% to 25% higher than a raw ZoomInfo export with no context. That's the difference between 50 meetings and 65 meetings from the same 1,000 names.
What breaks and how to avoid it
Issue 1: Duplicate contacts across tools
ZoomInfo and Clay both have the same person in their databases sometimes. If you're not careful, you'll create duplicate HubSpot records. Use email address as the dedupe key, not name or company. Run a dedupe step in Clay before pushing to HubSpot.
Issue 2: Stale enrichment data
LinkedIn activity and funding data go stale fast. Set a refresh cadence in Clay. Re-enrich your active lists every 30 days. Stale signals are worse than no signals because they create false urgency.
Issue 3: Over-filtering on signals
If you filter too hard on enrichment criteria, you'll shrink your list to nothing. Not every enterprise contact posts on LinkedIn. Not every company announces funding publicly. Use signals to prioritise, not to disqualify.
Issue 4: Credit burn from redundant enrichments
Clay charges credits every time you run an enrichment, even if the result is the same. Don't re-enrich the same contact repeatedly. Use conditional logic in Clay to skip enrichment steps if the data already exists.
Example enterprise prospecting workflow
Here's a real workflow Partner UP built for an HR Tech client targeting Series A and Series B companies.
1. Export 2,000 contacts from ZoomInfo: VP of People and above, companies with 100 to 500 employees, SaaS industry
2. Upload to Clay, run email waterfall on missing contacts
3. Enrich all 2,000 with funding data, LinkedIn activity, and job postings
4. Filter to contacts at companies that raised in the last 12 months or posted a People Ops role in the last 60 days
5. Push 800 prioritised contacts to HubSpot with custom properties
6. Build two sequences: high-signal contacts get personalised first touch, everyone else gets a standard intro
7. Re-enrich the remaining 1,200 contacts in 30 days and repeat
Result: 20% prospect-to-lead increase over the prior quarter's outbound motion, which used ZoomInfo alone with no signal layering.
FAQ
Can I use Clay instead of ZoomInfo for enterprise prospecting?
Not if you're serious about enterprise. Clay's waterfall is good for mid-market and below, but the match rates for VP-level and C-suite contacts at large companies don't compare to ZoomInfo's direct database. Use Clay to enrich ZoomInfo lists, not replace them.
How often should I refresh enrichment data in Clay?
Every 30 days for active lists. Funding announcements, LinkedIn activity, and job postings change quickly. Stale signals reduce conversion because your prioritisation logic is based on outdated context.
Does the Clay and HubSpot integration work on all Clay plans?
No. The native integration is available on Clay's Growth and Custom plans only. If you're on a lower tier, you'll need Zapier or Make, which adds latency and breaks more often on field mapping.
